Migration Path

Rockwell Automation has discontinued the first-generation 1769-L2x and L3x CompactLogix controllers. Published successor for the CompactLogix L2x / L3x: 1769-L33ER (CompactLogix 5370).

The 1769 Compact I/O and 1769-PA/PB power supplies carry over unchanged to a CompactLogix 5370 L3; the controller sits in the same left-most position on the same bus.
Open the project in Studio 5000 (RSLogix 5000 v20 also supports the L3xER), change the controller type, verify and download. The L3xER has dual EtherNet/IP ports with Device Level Ring, an SD card (1784-SD1) in place of CompactFlash and no RS-232 port, so serial devices move to Ethernet.
To move to Compact 5000 (5069) I/O instead, choose a CompactLogix 5380 and plan a re-termination; 1769 I/O does not mount on the 5380.

A like-for-like replacement or a repair keeps the existing program, wiring and panel layout; a migration is a project. Both are listed on this page so the choice can be made on lead time and budget.
