Intended Use

Intended for large-scale legacy process and discrete control applications. PLC-5 processors control the installed base of automotive, steel, pulp and paper, water treatment and chemical plants built from the late 1980s through the 2000s, with Remote I/O racks spread across the facility. Replacement processors keep those systems running without a rip-and-replace migration.

Migration Path

Rockwell Automation has discontinued the PLC-5 platform; new processors and communication modules are no longer manufactured. Published successor for the PLC-5: ControlLogix 5580 (1756-L8xE) or 5570 (1756-L7x) in a 1756 chassis.

Keep the existing 1771 Remote I/O racks running under the new controller with a 1756-RIO scanner, then convert racks one at a time instead of in a single outage.
Move 1771 I/O to 1756 I/O without rewiring field devices using the 1492 conversion wiring system (1492-CM1771 conversion modules with pre-wired cables).
Bridge DH+ with a 1756-DHRIO so existing PanelViews and PLC-5 peers stay on the network during the cutover.
Translate the RSLogix 5 program with the Studio 5000 Logix Designer project translation tool; publication 1756-RM085 lists the PLC-5 instructions and addressing that need manual rework.
