Intended Use

Built for single-axis servo positioning applications. Ultra 3000 drives run a single servo axis, either as a standalone indexer or under a Logix motion controller on SERCOS, on packaging, converting, medical and lab-automation machines built through the 2000s.

Migration Path

Rockwell Automation has discontinued the Ultra3000. Published successor for the Ultra3000: Kinetix 5100 (2198-E) for indexing and analog/step-direction use, or Kinetix 5300 (2198-C) for Integrated Motion under Logix.

  • Ultraware configurations are re-entered in KNX5100C (Kinetix 5100) or as a Logix axis in Studio 5000 (Kinetix 5300); there is no file import.
  • Existing MP-Series motors with Hiperface feedback connect through the 2198-K51CK-D15M (5100) or 2198-K53CK-D15M (5300) feedback connector kit.
  • SERCOS Ultra3000 (-SE) units were paired with a 1756-M0xSE; the Logix path moves to EtherNet/IP and CIP Motion.

A like-for-like replacement or a repair keeps the existing program, wiring and panel layout; a migration is a project. Both are listed on this page so the choice can be made on lead time and budget.

Common failures

Failure patterns we regularly see on Ultra 3000 servo drive hardware like the 2098-DSD-HV100X:

  • Drive will not power up or the status display stays dark: failed switch-mode control power supply board
  • IPM fault (E05): IGBT power module shorted after a motor or cable fault, gate driver stage damaged with it
  • Bus undervoltage / overvoltage (E09 / E10): aged DC bus electrolytic capacitors, or regen energy with the internal shunt unable to keep up
  • Precharge resistor or relay failure: the DC bus never charges after control power is applied
  • Illegal Hall state or motor feedback faults (E07 / E11) that follow the drive: feedback interface board or the encoder 5V supply
