Series & Revisions

No series in stock today; request a series above.

Series A uses the 1756-BA1 battery; Series B uses the 1756-BA2. Firmware files are the same for both.

Series notes: Studio 5000 keys on catalog number and firmware revision, not series; fit the correct battery for the series.

Intended Use

Intended for plant-wide discrete, process, and motion control applications. ControlLogix controllers run high I/O-count machines, batch and continuous process lines, and coordinated multi-axis motion from a single chassis, with redundancy and plant-network connectivity when the application calls for it. Typical homes are automotive and tire plants, food and beverage lines, water and wastewater, oil and gas skids, and large packaging systems.

Migration Path

Rockwell Automation has discontinued the 1756-L1, L55 and L6x controllers. Published successor for the ControlLogix 5550 / 5555 / 5560: 1756-L74 (ControlLogix 5570) or 1756-L84E (ControlLogix 5580).

  • The chassis, power supply, I/O and communication modules stay; only the controller slot changes.
  • Open the project in Studio 5000 (v20 or later for L7x, v28 or later for L8xE), change the controller type, verify and download. 1756-RM085 is not needed; this is a Logix-to-Logix move.
  • The L7x/L8x have no RS-232 port and no battery: serial-connected HMIs or modems move to Ethernet or USB, CompactFlash gives way to a 1784-SD1 card, and the 1756-BA1/BA2 battery is replaced by the 1756-ESMCAP energy-storage module.

A like-for-like replacement or a repair keeps the existing program, wiring and panel layout; a migration is a project. Both are listed on this page so the choice can be made on lead time and budget.

Common 1756-L64 failures

Failure patterns we regularly see on ControlLogix 5560 controller hardware like the 1756-L64:

  • CompactFlash (1784-CF64 / CF128) corruption: stored project does not load
  • Front RS-232 serial port damaged from a hot-plugged programming cable
  • Controller drops off the backplane intermittently: worn chassis connector or cracked board
  • Battery-holder corrosion after a leaking cell
  • Program lost on power cycle: battery (1756-BA1 / BA2) depleted, BAT LED red or flashing

Repair or replace?

ReplaceReplacement ControlLogix 5560 controller units are usually surplus or refurbished. Replace the 1756-L64 if it is dead or faulting and you have a current program backup. Check that the series and firmware match your project first. Order the exact 1756-L64. The catalog number sets the 16 MB memory, and a different suffix changes it. The 1756-L64 is not shelf stock, so sourcing time is part of the repair-or-replace decision.
RepairRepair keeps the exact 1756-L64 your program and licensing were validated on and can preserve the memory contents when no backup exists. It is usually the better call for battery-holder corrosion, a damaged comm port or a failed power section when matching stock is scarce. The two 1756-L64 symptoms we see most often are “Program lost on power cycle” and “Solid red OK LED (nonrecoverable major fault) at power-up”. If a replacement is already installed, repairing the failed 1756-L64 gives you a tested spare on the shelf, which is worth more on an older platform where a matching unit can take time to source. Repaired 1756-L64 units are function-tested before return and carry a 1-year warranty.
